Article Summary # 2

Doran, Greg. "In The City." Canadian Literature 200 (2009): 152. General OneFile. Web. 19 Oct. 2011.

Steven was able to create a gripping novel that examines the lives of three characters as they live through the war, and the unique struggles each of them beholds just attempting to survive. Through this he shows their intense battle to save humanity, refusing to give it up; while all asking the same question, will the town return to its former glory? Is it worth saving? This novel was inspired by the real life story of Vedran Smailovic’s, and his reaction to a mortar attack that had killed twenty-two people waiting for bread. The cellist has a great influence on all characters. When they hear him play the music lifts them from their situations, and restores the sense of hope that the town will be brought to its original state. Perhaps the character that is most influenced is arrow, because she is assigned to keep the cellist from being killed.  The rest of this article continues to talk about Girls Fall Down by Maggie Helwig. It examines how the two novels use different cities and writing styles, but still includes a very complex relationship between a destroyed city, and the citizens living within it.
