Unique Format

How the novel is separated using characters instead of chapters

The format of The Cellist of Sarajevo is very different from most other novels. Instead of going by chapters the book is organized into 4 parts. Throughout the four parts of the novel there are sections dedicated to each main character. In each section it will have the characters name at the beginning (like a chapter sequence). Throughout each section they will tell the story of their lives as they live through the war of sarajevo, and will often be trying to complete a task. Also, they will often go back in time to compare their old life to what it is now.

This way of organizing the novel makes the individual stories more significant, while keeping in touch with the main theme, as well as the story line. Personally, I prefer this style of laying out a novel because it really allows you to organize your thoughts while reading, instead of having to keep up with many different characters doing many different things during a chapter.  There may be a reason for this, and could be shown later in the novel, or I possibly have not realized it yet. If I come across anything, I will surely blog about it.
